The 55-km stretch from Ciumai to Vulcanesti is a part of the strategic M3 Chișinau-Giurgiulesti road, which provides a link between Trans-European Network corridors IV and IX and connects Moldova's capital to the only port in the landlocked country. The Giurgiulesti port not only provides commercial access to international waters, but also helps get grain and fuel in and out of neighbouring Ukraine since the start of Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, the EBRD noted.
The rehabilitation process was fully financed by the EBRD. It is part of a wider road improvement project worth 181.2 million euro ($200.1 million) that is jointly financed by the EBRD and the European Investment Bank with with 75 million euro each, and the European Union with 31.2 million euro.
"I am pleased to see the opening of the Ciumai-Vulcanesti road, which will not only improve the motorway for Moldovans, but also facilitate access to the country’s traditional markets and the European Union," EBRD president Odile Renaud-Basso, on a visit to Moldova, said at the road opening ceremony.
