The new space is located in the Unirii View building in central Bucharest and employs 50, the company said in a press release.

Currently, the Google team in Bucharest designs and develops projects related to wearables health experiences, Fitbit consumer services, research and Cloud infrastructure solutions.

Following Google’s takeover of U.S. consumer electronics and fitness company Fitbit and its integration into the local team in early 2021, Romania became Google’s largest development centre for wearables in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Google’s investments in Romania have covered educational projects through workshops offered in partnership with Romanian universities, digitalisation consultancy for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and support for startups through incubators, accelerators and other dedicated events.

Google opened its first Romanian office in Bucharest in 2010 and operates locally through its subsidiary Google Bucharest, which booked a 12.3 million lei ($2.45 million/2.49 million euro) net profit in 2021, according to data posted on the finance ministry's website.

The Bucharest subsidiary is one of over 70 Google branches in more than 50 countries, where over 139,000 are employed.
