January 9 (SeeNews) - Serbia's Nis Airport is expected to open a new passenger terminal in the second half of 2024, the head of state-owned airport operator Aerodromi Srbije, Mihajlo Zdravkovic, said.
"At the moment, construction works are in the final stage, and a public procurement for equipment and systems has been opened. So, if all goes as planned, we expect to have an operational new terminal building some time in the second half of the year," Zdravkovic told local news agency Tanjug over the weekend, as seen in a video file on the agency's website.
Zdravkovic said that once the new terminal opens for passengers, the old terminal will be demolished and the construction of a new one will begin on its site.
Parallel with this, a project to increase the number of aircraft parking slots to nine from four will begin.
In May, Serbian infrastructure minister Goran Vesic said the country is investing 11 million euro ($12 million) in the construction of Nis Airport's new terminal, which will be able to handle 1.5 million passengers per year.
According to Tanjug, the existing one, built in 1986, is designed to service 100,000 passengers annually.
The airport has said it saw its passenger numbers rising 15% to 448,312 in 2023.
