February 21 (SeeNews) - Serbia will complete by the end of September the overhaul of the 108-km Novi Sad-Subotica section of the railway line linking Belgrade to Hungary's Budapest, Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic said.
The plan is to complete the testing stage in two months and then open the railway line for passenger traffic on December 1, with the journey from Belgrade to Subotica, 10 km from the border with Hungary, to take 70 minutes, Vucic said as seen in a YouTube video published by public broadcaster RTS on Tuesday.
Serbia completed the overhaul of the 75-km railway section between the capital Belgrade and Novi Sad in 2022.
Construction works on the Novi Sad-Subotica railway link began in November 2021, after in 2018 Serbia awarded a 943 million euro ($1.02 billion) contract to China Railway International (CRI) and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) to carry out the job.
In March last year, Vesic said that Hungary is expected to complete by 2025 the overhaul of its 152 km section of the Budapest-Belgrade railway line. In November, the 26.63-km railway line connecting Subotica to the southern Hungarian city of Szeged reopened for passenger traffic following reconstruction.
