Serbia halfway through to completing works on country's longest tunnel

The 48 km Fruskogorski Corridor will be completed by September 2026, Vesic said during the weekend.

The tunnel is part of the Fruskogorski Corridor high-speed road that is being built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). Apart from the tunnel, the planned corridor also includes a new bridge over the Danube in the second-largest city of Novi Sad. Once built, the new high-speed road will link the towns of Ruma and Novi Sad, in northern Serbia, crossing the municipalities of Novi Sad, Irig and Ruma. It will be connected to the existing road linking Novi Sad and Zrenjanin to the Romanian border, as well as to the 55 km Ruma-Sabac-Loznica motorway that is due to be finished by the end of 2024.

In October 2020, Serbia signed a 606 million euro ($648 million) contract with CRBC for the construction of the Fruskogorski Corridor high-speed road. The project is financed by a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China
