Ahold Delhaize opens tech studio in Romania

The teams at the AD/01 tech studio will focus on web and app development, initiating strategic projects in areas such as eCommerce, infra, data, loyalty and core retail, Ahold Delhaize said in a press release on Wednesday.

“This tech studio will bring together sharp minds to develop innovations that serve people today and tomorrow and serve all our European brands. In doing so we are also investing in the Romanian market, where we already operate through our local brand Mega Image.” Wouter Kolk, CEO of Ahold Delhaize Europe and Indonesia, said.

The technology hub will focus on creating digital experiences in-store, both down the aisles and at the checkouts, as well as behind the scenes.

In October 2023, private equity firm MidEuropa agreed to sell Romanian retailer Profi Rom Food for about 1.3 billion euro ($1.39 billion) to Ahold Delhaize. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in 2024. Profi was acquired by MidEuropa in 2017.

Ahold Delhaize operates 977 stores in Romania under the Mega Image brand, according to data published on the owner’s website.
