September 13 (SeeNews) - The Transport Community of the Western Balkans has officially opened its headquarters in Belgrade, the Serbian infrastructure ministry said on Friday.
"This is a major step on the road to the European Union as Serbia is one foot in the Transport Union as of today. Through the Transport Community, as the first European institution in our country, we will contribute to connecting the region, but also to removing non-physical barriers at our borders," infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic said in a statement.
In July 2018, the European Union and Serbia agreed to establish the headquarters of the Transport Community of the Western Balkans in Belgrade. The decision was made by the transport ministers of the countries participating in the initiative and was confirmed in December 2017 during the first meeting of the EU-Western Balkans Council for the Transport Community in Brussels.
The European Commission signed a Transport Community Treaty with Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia at a summit in Trieste, Italy, in July 2017. Bosnia and Herzegovina signed the treaty in September of that year.
