October 7 (SeeNews) - Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu has dismissed Education Minister Cristian Adomnitei and proposed his deputy Anton Anton as his replacement, government spokeswoman Camelia Spataru said on Tuesday, just a week after Adomnitei backed a controversial pay rise for teachers.

Head of state Traian Basescu later endorsed Anton as new Education Minister.

Adomnitei backed a proposal for a 50% hike in teachers' wages, which Parliament endorsed under intense pressure from the opposition ahead of November general elections.

Tariceanu, Finance and Economy Minister Varujan Vosganian and central bank governor Mugur Isarescu have slammed the lawmakers' move, warning it was putting the country's macroeconomic stability at risk. The government has contested the legality of the wage hike before the Constitutional Court.
