December 27 (SeeNews) - The Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services (SMATSA) plans to start the construction of a 17.5 million euro ($19.5 million) air traffic control tower at Nikola Tesla airport in Belgrade in 2020, it said.

The construction of the 75-metre tower will be carried out by Serbian civil engineering company Energoprojekt Visokogradnja [BEL:EPVI] which will commence works at the beginning of next year, SMATSA said in a statement earlier this week.

"The facility will be built on 7,500 square metres. It will be a smart and energy-efficient building with state-of-the-art equipment, so that it can effectively handle growing traffic at Nikola Tesla Airport," the director of SMATSA, Predrag Jovanovic said in a statement.

The construction works are expected to be completed within 18 months, he noted.

The project is part of a programme for the modernisation of the flight control system in Serbian and Montenegro, funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB), SMATSA said.
