The acquisition, expected to be completed by mid-2025, marks a strategic move by Siemens to expand its portfolio and tap into major growth opportunities in the field of intelligent, battery-powered drive solutions, the company said in a press release on Thursday.

The IDT business of ebm-papst is based in St. Georgen and Lauf an der Pegnitz in Germany, and in Oradea in Romania. It employs 650, including 450 in Romania, according to the company's website.

"The acquisition by Siemens is a strategically significant step for us. What our industrial drive technology (IDT) business had lacked until now was a global sales organisation for maximum growth," Klaus Geissdorfer, CEO of the ebm-papst Group, was quoted as saying.

The business includes intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems in the protective extra-low voltage range and innovative motion control systems, used in free-range driverless transport systems.

Present in Oradea since 2017, ebm-papst produces small electrical motors and fans at its Romanian premises. It had invested 16.5 million euro ($17.8 million) in Oradea as of 2021, according to its website.
