December 2 (SeeNews) - Serbia’s state-owned railways operator Zeleznice Srbije said on Tuesday it completed the first stage of a 2.4 million euro ($3.0 million) upgrade of Dimitrovgrad station on the Bulgarian border financed by the European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR).

The reconstruction is a joint project with the Bulgarian government, Zeleznice’s general manager Milovan Markovic said in a statement, adding that the project is due to be completed by June.

Dimitrovgrad station lies on Corridor X which links Western Europe with Greece over land, running 2,360 kilometres across eight countries. Its length in Serbia is 800 kilometres. Two legs of the corridor go through the country – leg B connects the Hungarian capital Budapest with Novi Sad and Belgrade, and leg C links Nis with Pirot with the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

Serbia attaches priority importance to the construction of the Corridor X section on its territory as the country's poor transport infrastructure is seen as an obstacle to the inflow of foreign investments. The country will need some 1.7 billion euro to complete works on the transport corridor.
