November 30 (SeeNews) - Serbian state-owned power utility EPS plans to import 75 million kilowatt-hours (KWh) of electricity in December to make up for reduced electricity production due to the poor hydrological conditions, local media reported on Friday.

Serbia’s EPS mulls 75 mln KWh power imports in Dec due to drought – media

Electricity supply is stable for the time being despite the drought that has lasted for months, EPS said as quoted by Politika (www.politika.rs). Electricity production in hydropower plants in November is higher than in the previous months because of a rise in the water flow in the Danube to 6,000 cubic metres per second (cu m/s) from 3,100 cu m/s last month, it added. In the last days of November hydropower generation was 26.5 million KWh per day, twice as much as the 12.5 million KWh per day in October.

The Balkan countries generate about 25% of their energy from hydropower plants but in the first half of the year they produced just 16% of the total, Politika added.

Electricity consumption in Serbia these days is about 100 million kWh per day, somewhat less than the average for November due to relatively high temperatures for this time of the year.
