October 22 (SeeNews) - Serbia plans to give a new line of life to loss making state-owned Jat Airways by adding 12 Airbus aircraft to its fleet and a possible $140 million (107.14 million euro) investment from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Serbia's finance minister said in a statement on Monday.

The country plans to renew a leasing contract with aircraft maker Airbus, by backing the company with state guarantees of $140 million, Mladjan Dinkic added.

In addition, an equity commitment in Jat Airways by UAE’s flag carrier Etihad was discussed at a meeting of Serbian and UAE’s officials last week. Etihad would, in this case, take over the state guarantees of $140 million in exchange for a stake in the newly formed airline, he added.

According to the minister the UAE have an interest in such an undertaking because they are planning to invest in Serbian agriculture in order to ensure their own food security and will need adequate logistics centers such as a cargo terminal at Belgrade airport for Etihad.
