“On Serbian territory, 43% of the construction works on the Nis-Dimitrovgrad interconnection have been completed, running ahead of schedule,” Djedovic said, as quoted in a press release on Tuesday.

“A total of 93% of the contracted pipes have been delivered, while 80% have already been distributed along the route of the future gas pipeline,” she added.

The construction of the pipeline on Serbian territory started a year ago, in February 2022, while Bulgaria broke ground a year later.

In February last year, the Serbian government said it expected the 170-km pipeline to become operational by the middle of 2023.

Serbia, which currently receives its natural gas supplies from Russia, began talks with Azerbaijan last year for potentially diversifying its energy sources.
