November 13 (SeeNews) - Serbia has started the reconstruction of the 100-km railway line linking the southern city of Nis to Dimitrovgrad, on the Bulgarian border, the country's railway infrastructure company said.
The project will cost 169.7 million euro ($181.4 million), with the deadline for completion set at three and a half years, the company said in a press release on Saturday.
The project includes the reconstruction of the 80 km Sicevo-Stanicenje-Dimitrovgrad section, the construction of a 22 km single-track electrified bypass around Nis and the electrification of the entire railway line that connects Nis to Dimitrovgrad.
The project was originally expected to start in August.
The Nis-Dimitrovgrad link forms part of pan-European transport Corridor X connecting central Europe to Thessaloniki in Greece.
In March, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the EU signed with Serbia a 2.2 billion euro financing package for the reconstruction and modernisation of the Belgrade - Nis railway line.
