November 8 (SeeNews) - Romanian power grid operator Transelectrica said it has approved the connection of a planned 300-megawatt hydropower plant (HPP) to its grid.

Romania's Transelectrica oks connection to grid of planned 300 MW HPP

Transelectrica granted Romania's Water Energy Systems a technical approval for connecting the HPP to the grid earlier this week, according to data published on the operator's website.

The pumped-storage hydropower plant, CHEAP Frasin-Pangarati, should be put into operation in 2017. It will be located in the northeastern county of Neamt.

Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is a type of hydroelectric power generation used by some power plants for load balancing. The method stores energy in the form of water, pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation. Low-cost off-peak electric power is used to run the pumps and stored water is released through turbines during periods of high electricity demand.
