Exports fell by 15.3% while imports were down 11.2% in the January-August period, INS said in a statement.
The European Union absorbed 73% of Romania's exports in the period under review, and accounted for 73.2% of the country's imports.
Machinery and transport equipment accounted for 47.1% of Romanian exports and 36% of imports, while other manufactured goods made up 30.9% of exports and 30.2% of imports during the first eight months of 2020.
In August alone, Romania's exports fell by 8% on the year, while imports decreased 3.9%. August deficit narrowed to 1.320 billion euro from 1.513 billion euro in the same period of 2019.
Romania's trade deficit widened by an annual 14% to 17.28 billion euro in 2019.
