BUCHAREST (Romania), September 24 (SeeNews) – Romanian President Traian Basescu called on Thursday for a referendum to be held on downsizing the country’s parliament to a single chamber with 300 seats in a bid to tame corruption.

Romanian President Calls for Referendum To Make Parliament Unicameral

Romania's bicameral parliament now has a total of 471 deputies.

"A unicameral parliament means that decisions will be taken easier and the legislature will become more efficient," the presidential press office quoted Basescu as saying in a press statement.

At the same time, the measure will allow to cut costs and reduce corruption as there will be fewer high-level politicians involved in abuse of power, Basescu added in the statement.

Basescu proposed to combine the referendum with the upcoming presidential elections in Romania on November 22.
