September 24 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu weakened against the euro on Monday in listless trading and thin volumes, dealers said.

The currency closed at 4.5150/5180 per euro compared to 4.5100/4.5140 on Friday.

A local dealer told SeeNews that the market was very calm on Monday, with local players dominating the market.

"The currency opened at 4.5170/5200 per euro and firmed to an intraday high of 4.5120/5150 but retreated later," she added.

Romania's central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.5176 lei per euro on Monday, compared to 4.5125 lei on Friday. For the U.S. dollar, BNR set the reference exchange rate at 3.4977 lei versus 3.4642 lei on Friday.

BNR on Monday injected 12.08 billion lei in the interbank money market through a one-week repo deal at a rate of 5.25%, equal to its key monetary rate.

Turnover on the Romanian interbank leu deposit market rose to 1.1 billion lei on Friday from 603.8 million lei on Thursday. The central bank will issue Monday's turnover figure on Tuesday.

Interest rates on overnight leu deposits surged to 4.79%/5.29% on Monday from 1.13%/1.63% on Friday.
