September 10 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu closed weaker versus the euro on Thursday, mirroring the performance of most of its regional peers, dealers said.
The leu ended at 4.2500/2540 per euro, compared to 4.2440/2470 per euro on Wednesday.
The leu eased in line with the Polish zloty and the Hungarian forint, failing to benefit from the weaker U.S dollar and the rises on global stock markets, probably due to jitters about the fundamentals of the regional economies, one dealer told SeeNews.
The Romanian central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.2495 per euro on Thursday, compared to 4.2463 per euro on Wednesday. For the U.S. dollar, the BNR set the reference exchange rate at 2.9231 versus Wednesday’s 2.9299.
Turnover on the interbank leu deposit market rose to 2.594 billion lei on Wednesday from 1.917 billion lei on Tuesday. The BNR will issue Thursday’s turnover figures on Friday.
Interest rates on overnight leu deposits remained flat from Wednesday at 8.19%/8.69%.
