December 29 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu lost ground versus the euro on Monday, the first working day after the Christmas holidays, interbank FX data indicated.

The local currency closed at 4.4738 per euro, compared to a close of 4.4680 per euro on Wednesday. December 25 and 26 were public and market holidays as Romanians celebrated Orthodox Christmas.

The leu changed hands between 4.4661 and 4.4755 against the euro during the trading session, real-time interbank FX data published by local portal Conso.ro indicated.

Romania's central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.4744 per euro, versus 4.4758 lei per euro on Wednesday. For the U.S. dollar, BNR set its reference exchange rate at 3.6684 lei compared to 3.6595 lei on Wednesday.

Turnover on the Romanian interbank leu deposit market rose to 1.15 billion lei on December 24. BNR will issue Monday's turnover figure on Tuesday.

Interest rates on overnight leu deposits rose to 0.15%/0.61% from 0.06%/0.51% on Wednesday.
