October 31 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu broke a four-day winning streak on Wednesday, retreating versus the euro in high volumes, dealers said.

The currency closed at 4.5425/5450 per euro compared to 4.5350/5380 on Tuesday.

It opened at 4.5400 per euro and changed hands between 4.5350 and 4.5450 during the trading session, a local dealer told SeeNews.

“The volatility remained low on Wednesday, although traded volumes were very large,” he added.

Romania's central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.5358 lei per euro on Wednesday, compared to 4.5442 lei per euro on Tuesday. For the U.S. dollar, BNR set the reference exchange rate at 3.4873 lei versus 3.5023 lei on Tuesday.

Turnover on the Romanian interbank leu deposit sank to 0.99 billion lei on Tuesday from 1.77 billion lei on Monday. The central bank will issue Wednesday's turnover figure on Thursday.

Interest rates on overnight leu deposits edged down to 4.90%/5.40% from 4.91%/5.41% on Tuesday.
