September 2 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu weakened beyond the 4.23-per-euro notch on Wednesday on increasing risk aversion among investors, dealers said.
The leu ended at 4.2380/2430 per euro, compared to 4.2240/2270 per euro on Tuesday.
Risk aversion put pressure on global and local equity markets and on the other currencies of emerging markets in the region which dragged the leu down along with them, a forex dealer told SeeNews.
The Romanian central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.2372 per euro on Wednesday, compared to 4.2229 per euro on Tuesday. For the U.S. dollar, the BNR set the reference exchange rate at 2.9807 versus Tuesday’s 2.9470.
Turnover on the interbank leu deposit market fell to some 1.41 billion lei on Tuesday from 1.475 billion lei on Monday. The BNR will issue Wednesday’s figures on Thursday.
Interest rates on overnight leu deposits on Wednesday remained flat from the previous day at 8.93%/9.43%.
