December 16 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu edged up versus the euro on Tuesday ending a several-day losing streak as volatility remained high, interbank FX data indicated.

The local currency closed at 4.4774/4829 per euro compared to 4.4791/4842 per euro on Monday.

The leu changed hands between 4.4730 and 4.4863 against the euro during the trading session, real-time interbank FX data published by local portal Conso.ro indicated.

Commenting on the leu's movement, ING Bank Romania said in a note to investors earlier in the day: "We continue to look for a return towards 4.44/EUR as domestic debt markets continue trading well."

Romania's central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.4738 lei per euro versus 4.4788 lei per euro on Monday. For the U.S. dollar, BNR set its reference exchange rate at 3.5818 lei compared to 3.6061 lei a day earlier.

Turnover on the Romanian interbank leu deposit market fell to 452 million lei on Monday from 569 million lei on Friday. The central bank will issue Tuesday's turnover figure on Wednesday.

Interest rates on overnight leu deposits rose to 0.11%/0.51% from 0.08%/0.50% on Monday.
