Romanian leu gains ground vs euro

BUCHAREST (Romania), October 22 (SeeNews) – The Romanian leu gained ground versus the euro in low volatility on Monday, local dealers said.

The currency closed at 4.5750/5770 per euro compared to 4.5810/5820 on Friday.

It opened at 4.5780/5820 per euro and changed hands between 4.5740/5760 and 4.5780/5810 during the trading session, a local dealer told SeeNews.

Romania's central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.5757 lei per euro on Monday, compared to 4.5809 on Friday. For the U.S. dollar, BNR set the reference exchange rate at 3.5051 lei versus 3.5097 lei on Friday.

BNR on Monday injected 5.0 billion lei in the interbank money market through a one-week repo deal at a rate of 5.25%, equal to its key monetary rate. Last Monday it injected 6.0 billion lei in the interbank money market.

Turnover on the Romanian interbank leu deposit market fell to 1.07 billion lei on Friday from 1.53 billion on Thursday. The central bank will issue Monday’s turnover figure on Tuesday.

Interest rates on overnight leu deposits plunged to 3.23%/3.73% from 4.70%/5.20% on Friday.
