The currency ended at 4.4720/4740 per euro compared to 4.4750/4780 on Friday.
The leu opened at 4.4680/4710 per euro and offshore euro-sales pushed it to its intraday high at 4.4570 in the morning, a local dealer told SeeNews.
In the afternoon the leu started to depreciate and hit an intraday low of 4.4740 per euro, she added.
Romania's central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.4675 lei per euro on Monday, the leu's highest value since August 30, compared to 4.4747 lei per euro on Friday. For the U.S. dollar, BNR set the reference exchange rate at 3.3954 lei versus 3.4205 lei on Friday.
BNR injected 4.0 billion lei in the interbank money market on Monday through a one-week repo deal at a rate of 5.25%, equal to its key monetary rate. Last Monday, it also injected 4.0 billion lei in the interbank money market.
Turnover on the Romanian interbank leu deposit market increased to 1.5 billion lei on Friday from 1.3 billion lei on Thursday. The central bank will issue Monday’s turnover figure on Tuesday.
Interest rates on overnight leu deposits fell to 5.19%/5.69% from 5.44%/5.94% on Friday.
