September 3 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu eased against the euro on Thursday in low volumes and calm trading, dealers said.

The leu ended at 4.2450/2480 per euro, compared to 4.2380/2430 per euro on Wednesday.

The Romanian currency mirrored in general its regional peers, which also eased in the morning, but unlike them it failed to recover in the afternoon as it was traded in reduced volumes, a forex dealer told SeeNews. The leu opened at 4.2400/2430 per euro was changing hands in a tight range between 4.2380 and 4.2480 per euro during the trading session, the dealer added.

The dealer added that the leu may ease beyond 4.25 per euro in the next days.

The Romanian central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.2442 per euro on Thursday, compared to 4.2372 per euro on Wednesday. For the U.S. dollar, the BNR set the reference exchange rate at 2.9673 versus Wednesday’s 2.9807.

Turnover on the interbank leu deposit market rose to some 1.647 billion lei on Wednesday from 1.41 billion lei on Tuesday. The BNR will issue Thursday’s figures on Friday.

Interest rates on overnight leu deposits on Thursday remained flat from the previous day at 8.93%/9.43%.
