BUCHAREST (Romania), October 19 (SeeNews) – The Romanian leu depreciated further against the euro on Friday as liquidity tightened, dealers said.

Romanian leu cedes more ground vs euro

The currency closed at 4.5810/5820 per euro compared to 4.5777/5827 on Thursday and 4.5770/5800 on Wednesday.

It opened at 4.5770/5800 per euro and changed hands between 4.5795 and 4.5870 during the trading session, a local dealer told SeeNews.

"Interest from both domestic and foreign players was low, probably because the commercial flows were very, very reduced," the dealer added.

Romania's central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.5809 lei per euro on Friday, which is the leu's lowest level since August 3, compared to 4.5789 on Thursday. For the U.S. dollar, BNR set the reference exchange rate at 3.5097 lei versus 3.4888 lei on Thursday.

Turnover on the Romanian interbank leu deposit market increased to 1.53 billion lei on Thursday from 1.07 billion on Wednesday. The central bank will issue Friday’s turnover figure on Monday.

Interest rates on overnight leu deposits decreased further to 4.70%/5.20% from 4.93%/5.43% on Thursday.
