December 29 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu on Monday briefly weakened to 4.0 per euro on illiquid market ahead of the New Year holidays, prompting expectations of central bank intervention, dealers said.

The Romanian currency reached 4.0000/4.0050 per euro in morning trade before recovering to around 3.99 per euro by 11.30 a.m. (0930 GMT), one dealer told SeeNews.

She added she expected the central bank to intervene later in the day to support the leu as doubts about the ability of the country's new coalition government to tackle the economic crisis gripped foreign investors.
