The country's commitment to increase installed solar capacity is fully aligned with the European Union's Solar Energy Strategy, Iohannis said on Sunday at the COP28 summit after Romania joined the International Solar Alliance, according to a livestream published on the social media account of the president's office.
Membership of the alliance will support Romania in meeting its solar energy targets, while enabling it to expand its cooperation with countries interested in accelerating climate change mitigation, Iohannis added.
By 2050, Romania's energy mix will consist of 86% renewable energy, complemented by low-carbon energy such as nuclear, the president said in a social media post on Saturday, without elaborating.
Currently, solar energy accounts for 1.61% of Romania's energy mix, followed by hydropower with 30.61% and hydrocarbon with 27.84%, according to local power grid operator Transelectrica.
The International Solar Alliance (ISA) was conceived during the COP21 summit held in Paris in 2015 as a joint effort by India and France to mobilize efforts against climate change through deployment of solar energy solutions, according to its website. Currently, over 95 countries are members of the ISA.
