The project was initially scheduled to be completed by mid-2015 but was delayed until the end of 2015 and a programme to compensate for the delay was then designed, municipal authorities said in a weekend press release.
The regional waste management system, which has an operational period of 23 years, will treat more than 34 tonnes of waste per year. It is financed with EU funds under the operational programme Environment 2007-2013.
The project will benefit more than 366,000 people in 12 municipalities in the southeastern region of Stara Zagora.
Stara Zagora launched the construction of the system in July this year. The project is estimated to cost 52 million levs ($32.6 million/26.6 million euro) and consists of the construction of a regional waste management centre with a depot for non-hazardous waste, a municipal centre for recycling, a separation and composting installation, as well as three transfer stations in Kazanlak, Gurkovo and Galabovo.
