March 18 (SeeNews) - Montenegro's electricity production rose 25% to 4,043 GWh last year, meeting the needs of gross consumption which went up 3% to 3,179 GWh, the country's energy ministry said.
Last year's total production was also 12% higher than planned. The electricity produced from renewable energy sources rose 42% to 2,520 GWh in 2023, while the electricity produced by thermal power plant TE Pljevlja increased 5% to 1,523 GWh, the ministry said in a report on the country's 2023 energy balance published last week.
In particular, hydropower plant HE Perucica generated 1,039 GWh of electricity last year, up 45% compared to 2022, while hydropower plant HE Piva saw its production jump 67% to 933 GWh.
The country's small hydropower plants produced a total of 226 GWh of electricity in 2023, up 32% on the year, the produced wind energy fell 4% to 310 GWh, and the solar power production jumped to 13 GWh last year from just 4 GWh in 2022.
In 2023, the annual loss in the electricity distribution network was unchanged from the previous year at 474 GWh.
