Officers of the Special Police Department arrested Perovic on Wednesday after searching her office and official vehicle, following an order by the Special State Prosecutor's Office, according to a statement issued after the arrest.

Perovic is now subject to interrogation within the legal term, the statement read, adding the police is continuing to search her apartment and other premises.

Perovic was appointed to head the anti-corruption agency in July 2020. Prior to that, she served as head of the Basic Court in Cetinje, the former royal capital of Montenegro.

Perovic's arrest takes place several days after Sunday's arrests of former head of the Special Prosecutor's Office Milivoje Katnic and former deputy chief of the national police department tasked with fighting organised crime, Zoran Lazovic. Katnic and Lazovic were arrested over suspected abuse of office and creation of a criminal organisation. On Monday, the High Court in Podgorica ordered a 30-day detention for both Katnic and Lazivic due to the risk of escape and possible influence on witnesses.
