Moldova’s Wireless Operators Q2 Sales Rise 3.0% Y/Y, Sales of Fixed-line Operators Down 16%

CHISINAU (Moldova), August 18 (SeeNews) – The sales of Moldova’s four mobile operators rose by 3.0% on the year to 755.4 million lei ($67 million/48 million euro) in the second quarter of 2009, the country’s telecoms regulator ANRCETI said on Tuesday.

ANRCETI said in a statement that sales of Moldova’s fixed-line operators decreased by an annual 16% to 454 million lei in the second quarter, while the sales of Internet providers rose by 44% to 104.5 million lei, the regulator said.

The number of mobile and fixed-line subscribers in Moldova rose by 23.2% and 3.9%, respectively, in the quarter of April through June.

The number of fixed-line subscribers reached 1.129 million at the end of June and the penetration rate in this segment was 31.6%. Wireless operators had 2.67 million clients and the penetration rate of mobile services reached 74.9% at the end of June, ANRCETI said.

Moldova, with a population of four million, has four mobile operators. Orange, majority owned by France Telecom has 73.05% market share in terms of sales. The fixed-line sector is dominated by the state-owned Moldtelecom, which had a 97.9% market share in terms of sales at the end on June.
