The number of unemployed in the country of 2.5 million people was 39,700 at the end of March, falling from 50,800 at the end of the first quarter last year, the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, said in a statement.
The jobless rate was 6.6% among people aged between 15 and 24, dropping from the 10.3% value recorded a year earlier, and 4.5% among people aged between 20 and 64, down from 5.5% in the first three months of 2023.
Moldova’s workforce declined by 2.1% to 896,500 in the first quarter of 2024. Of the country’s workforce, 51.8% were women and 48.2% were men.
The unemployment rate among men in Moldova was 4.5% versus 4.4% among women.
The statistics bureau also said the jobless rate reached 4.2% in urban areas, compared to 4.7% in rural areas.
Moldova’s unemployment rate rose to 4.6% in 2023 from 3.1% a year earlier.
