SKOPJE (Macedonia), September 24 (SeeNews) – Mobile phone users in Macedonia comprise 80% of the country's entire population of two million with the share of those still making calls over landlines at 69%, a survey commissioned by the Macedonian Agency for Electronic Communications (AEK) showed.

Mobile Phone Use in Macedonia More Widespread Than Landlines - Survey

The Strategic Marketing and Media Research Agency conducted the poll among 1,100 people aged over 16 between September 3 and 9, AEK said on Wednesday.

Among the polled mobile users, 69% said they are Т-Mobile Macedonia subscribers, 22% use the services of Telekom Slovenije’s local unit, Cosmofon AD, and 9.0% belong to the clientbase of Telekom Austria’s Macedonian unit, Vip Operator DOOEL Skopje, the survey indicated.

Magyar Telekom is the majority shareholder of Makedonski Telekom AD, Macedonia's leading fixed-line operator, and of its subsidiary T-Mobile Macedonia.

The survey also found that 55% of Macedonians use Internet. Among them, 39% said they use Internet serviced provided by Makedonski Telekom, followed by On.net with 18%, Telekabel with 10%, local cable Internet providers with 8.0%, CableTel DOOEL Skopje with 5.0%, Neotel and Cosmofon AD with 1.0%.

The competition on Macedonia's fixed-line voice market intensified in 2008 as Internet providers On.net and Neotel, cable TV operators CableTel DOOEL Skopje and Telekabel as well as Cosmofon all launched wireline services.
