Macedonia's Skopje Airport Dec Passenger Traffic Up 10.8% Y/Y

January 24 (SeeNews) - Passenger traffic through the international airport of Macedonia's capital Skopje rose by 10.8% year-on-year to 48,951 people in December, the airport said on Thursday.

Cargo traffic through the airport increased by an annual 56.7% to 358.52 tonnes in the last month of 2007, the Skopje airport said in a statement.

Take-offs and landings rose to 994, up by 8.9% from the same month a year earlier, it added.

In December, 15 airlines operated scheduled flights from the Skopje airport to 16 destinations, mainly in southeastern and western Europe. Six carriers performed charter flights to 11 destinations, mainly tourist centres in Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey and Greece.

Last year's top destinations from the Skopje airport were Zurich and Vienna. Istanbul registered the largest increase in passenger traffic compared to 2006.

Skopje introduced six new destinations last year - Paris, Sarajevo, Cologne, Ancona,Verona and Sofia.

Macedonia renamed the Skopje Airport to Skopje Alexander the Great Airport in June 2007.
