December 28 (SeeNews) - Macedonia's economy contracted by a real 1.8% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2009, after expanding by a revised 6.4% a year earlier, preliminary data of the country's Statistics Office showed.
Macedonia's gross domestic product (GDP) totalled 104.032 billion denars ($2.4 billion/1.7 billion euro) in current prices in the third quarter, the statistics office said in a statement on Friday.
The sectors of mining and quarrying, manufacturing, together with electricity, gas and water supply posted an aggregate annual decrease of 13.4%.
In the third quarter, the following sectors posted the biggest growth: financial intermediation, real estate, renting and business activities, and other community, social and personal service activities (+8.2%) as well as constructions (+7.5%), the statement said.
Household final consumption, including non-profit institutions serving households, decreased by an annual 3.6% in nominal terms in the third quarter of 2009 and its share in GDP stood at 76.2%. In the same period, import of goods and of services decreased by 26.9% in nominal terms.
Macedonia's economy contracted by 1.4% in the second quarter of 2009, compared to a 7.9% revised growth a year earlier.
