SKOPJE (Macedonia), November 27 (SeeNews) – Macedonian power producer Elektrani na Makedonija (ELEM) said its 80 megawatt (MW) Kozjak hydro power plant, built by Chinese water and electric corporation CWE, was brought on stream at full operational capacity on Friday, local media reported.

ELEM and CWE signed a protocol certifying that the Chinese company has fully executed the technical aspect of the contract for the construction of HPP Kozjak, thus bringing on stream at full capacity the plant’s two units, the Macedonian Information Agency (www.mia.com.mk) said.

Kozjak’s two units went into trail mode in 2004, the agency said.

CWE launched the construction of HPP Kozjak, located on the Treska river, 25 kilometres from the capital of Skopje, in November 2002.

ELEM's priorities in the period ahead include modernisation of the existing and construction of new hydro power plants: Lukovo Pole, Cebren, Galiste and Boskov Most, MIA reported, quoting ELEM Director General Vlatko Cingovski as saying at the inauguration ceremony. He did not provide further details.

Macedonia has two thermal and seven hydro power plants, which produced a combined 5,615 gigawatthours of electricity in 2008, up 1.9% from a year earlier.
