CBAK was officially transformed into a central bank in August 2006. In the previous eight years it acted as Kosovo’s financial authority, performing many of the functions of a central bank.
Kosovo, where 90% of the population is ethnic Albanian, declared its secession from Serbia in February, after almost nine years under the administration of the United Nations. Serbia, backed by its historical ally Russia, says it would never recognise Kosovo as an independent state. More than 40 countries have recognised Kosovo’s independence.
