December 18 (SeeNews) - Italian industrial group Pirelli will extend the suspension of production in its Romanian unit by one week, until December 24, Bucharest-based daily Business Standard reported on Thursday.

Italy’s Pirelli Suspends Production in Romania for One More Week – Media

"We decided to stop production in our unit temporarily for three weeks due to fall in demand. We halted production for two weeks from December 2 and now we will stop production from December 17 for one more week," Business Standard quoted Pirelli Tyres Romania CEO Enrico Malerba as saying.

He added that the crisis in the automotive industry around the world could deepen in the first half of 2009.

“We evaluate the situation every day but we are unable to predict what we will do in the long term,” Malerba said.

Pirelli owns a car tyre factory in Slatina, in the southwestern Romania county of Olt. Its installed capacity is two millions of tyres a year.
