A survey conducted by Business Standard indicated that Hidroconstructia, a company building hydropower plants, will lay off 3,331 by March 2009. Construction company Vega’93 ranked second with plans to cut 1,600 jobs in the first quarter. Car parts maker Rolem followed with 1,000 employees to be laid off.

The list also includes construction company Cominco and national postal services provider Posta Romana, which plan to dismiss 980 and 615, respectively.

"We expect that the number of dismissed in the construction sector will reach 70,000 by March next year. Funding problems will force construction companies to revise their budgets several times during 2009, which will influence staff portfolio, too," Business Standard quoted the head of the Romanian Association of Entreprenuers in Construction, Laurentiu Plosceanu, as saying.
