SARAJEVO (Bosnia and Herzegovina), September 23 (SeeNews) – The European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide around 3.0 million euro ($4.4 million) for a small arms reduction project in Bosnia, the UNDP office in Sarajevo said on Tuesday.

EU, UNDP To Provide 3.0 Mln Euro for Reducing Small Arms in Bosnia

The project aims to diminish risks arising from the uncontrolled possession of small arms by the Bosnian population and the threats to human security that they pose, the UNDP said in a statement.

Following the 1992-95 war in Bosnia, some 100,000 small arms and 24,000 tonnes of ammunition are estimated to be still in possession of the population, it said.

The European Commission delegation in Bosnia and the UNDP will sign a cooperation agreement for the project on Wednesday. The EU executive will provide 2.72 million euro, while the UNDP will participate with some 324,000 euro, the statement said.

The war in Bosnia killed more than 100,000 people and displaced some two million from their homes.
