EC to recommend launch of accession talks with Bosnia - report

EU leaders should subsequently discuss the recommendation on Bosnia at a meeting in Brussels next week, Politico reported on Monday.

Bosnia submitted its application for EU membership in February 2016 and was awarded EU candidate status in December 2022.

A year later the European Council requested a progress report from the Commission by March 2024 to decide on starting EU accession talks with the country.

The Commission said in November that Bosnia lacks significant progress in key areas such as public administration reform, judiciary independence, anti-corruption efforts, and migration management and needs to apply further efforts to achieve key goals.

The Commission is also set to propose on Tuesday the negotiating frameworks for Ukraine and Moldova, outlining the guidelines and basic principles for accession talks, according to the Politico report.

The European Council decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova in December 2023.
