Drug Maker MSD Romania's 8-mo Turnover Rises 30%

October 16 (SeeNews) - Drug maker Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) Romania on Thursday said its turnover for the first eight months of 2008 rose 30% on the year to 84.437 million lei ($30.1 million/22.3 million euro).

The company announced a market share of 2.1%, ranking it fifth in a pharmaceutical market that has seen a 24% growth, it said in a statement, quoting data of market researcher IMS.

MSD Romania, division of U.S.-based drug manufacturer Merck & Co., Inc., has ended 2007 with a 2.0% market share and a turnover of 88.125 million lei.

"The pharmaceutical market in Romania is currently undergoing a period of turbulence and it is difficult to predict how we will end this year [...] We expect to finish the year according to our business plan," Agata Jakoncic, director general of MSD Romania said in the statement, but did not elaborate.

The main players on Romania's drug market include British GSK, Dutch-based A&D Pharma, Czech Zentiva, and local Antibiotice and Biofarm.
