February 5 (SeeNews) - Croatia-based engineering company Lurssen Design Center Kvarner said on Monday that together with 14 partners from seven countries it will design and build in the next four years a hydrogen-fuelled passenger ship that will sail in the Adriatic Sea under a project sponsored by the European Union.
The estimated overall value of the project, named Zero-Emission Adriatic Ship (ZEAS), is 18.9 million euro ($20.3 million), of which the EU will provide 13.5 million euro from its programme for research and innovation Horizon Europe, Lurssen Design Center Kvarner said in a press release.

The company is coordinator of the project whose aim is to create a sustainable climate-neutral fuel system. The project envisages the deployment of a hydrogen filling station on shore and the development of a digital twin system in order to manage, control and monitor the ship's propulsion system, which will facilitate the use and maintenance of the ship.
The other partners in the project are Croatian state-owned ferryboat operator Jadrolinija, University of Rijeka, investment management company Gitone Kvarner, engineering companies Maritime Center of Excellence and Scan Projekt and the Croatian Hydrogen Association, Greek research company DNV Hellas Single Member, Austrian hydrogen technology research centre HyCenta Research, Spanish environmental consultancy Tecnoambiente, German University of Technology in Chemnitz, Slovenian IT company ZenLab, Norwegian clean tech company developing zero-emission technology for the maritime and heavy industry TECO 2030 ASA. Norwegian innovative engineering and equipment development company TECO 2030 Innovation Center is an associated partner.
