The modernisation should be completed within 16 months, Gredelj said in a statement. The number of engines that will be upgraded was not disclosed.

TZV Gredelj (www.tzv-gredlej.hr ) is a subsidiary of state-owned railways operator Croatian Railways and has two plants in Zagreb. It plans to move all its operations to one of its plants by the end of 2009.

Kosovo's railways were managed by the NATO-led Kosovo Forces for two years after the end of the 1993-95 war. The management was handed over to UNMIK in March 2001 when cargo and passenger transport resumed.
