The new centre covers an area of 32,000 square metres and employs more than 1,500 workers, the government said in a statement on Monday when the new facility was inaugurated in the presence of prime minister Andrej Plenkovic.

It will provide better and quicker parcel delivery thanks to the relocation into one place of the postal operator's business that was so far dispersed in several locations across Zagreb, Plenkovic said in the statement.

The new facility will implement modern technologies, which will raise the efficiency of parcel sorting, he added.

Hrvatska Posta said earlier that the construction of the sorting centre in Velika Gorica, launched in 2017, represents the largest capital investment in its history.

The facility is equipped with a new package sorting system with a capacity to process 15,000 packages per hour.

In July, local media reported that US online retailer Amazon is planning to enter into exclusive cooperation with Hrvatska Posta for delivery and logistics support in Croatia and most likely the wider region, including Bosnia, Montenegro and Serbia.

According to the reports, an Amazon team of experts had visited Croatia to discuss with Hrvatska Posta the planned cooperation and to visit the new logistics centre.
