The airport underwent an extensive upgrade, becoming an international hub compliant with European operational and security standards for international flights, as well as Schengen airspace regulations, Concelex said in a press release on Thursday.

The financing for the project was provided through European funds, Concelex, which was general contractor, said.

The project included the modernisation and expansion of the passenger terminal, the construction of fixed and mobile boarding tunnels, and enhancements to the aircraft de-icing/anti-icing platform. With a built-up area of 9,300 sq m, the Delta Dunarii international airport now features improved security measures, including three passenger security filter systems, six border police cabins, five check-in desks, and three boarding gates.

The Tulcea airport located close to the Danube Delta became operational in 1952, according to its website.
