October 14 (SeeNews) - Czech utility group CEZ has connected to the grid the 216th wind turbine at its Fantanele-Cogealac wind farm in Romania, which now has an installed capacity of 540 megawatts (MW), making it the largest onshore wind farm in Europe, the group's Bulgarian unit said in a statement on Sunday.

CEZ brings capacity of Fantanele-Cogealac wind farm in Romania up to 540 MW

Although still incomplete, the wind park has generated 655.9 gigawatt-hours of power over the first nine months of the year, enough to power 600,000 households, CEZ Bulgaria said in a statement.

The latest turbine of the wind park was connected to the grid on Thursday.

All 240 of the wind turbines planned for the site should be up and running by the end of this year, bringing the total installed capacity to 600 MW.

The Fantanele-Cogealac wind farm is situated on a 12 by 6.0 kilometre footprint in the Romanian province of Dobruja, 17 kilometres from the Black Sea coast. The park uses GE wind turbines with an installed rated capacity of 2.5 MW per unit.

CEZ Group acquired the project for the construction of the Fantanele-Cogealac wind park from Continental Wind Partners in August 2008. The first turbine was launched in June 2010.

The total investment of the CEZ Group in the project should reach some 1.1 billion euro ($1.4 billion).
